The Battle of Bobigny: A Spatial Report of a Police Tear Gas Attack is an installation by Léopold Lambert, the editor-in-chief of The Funambulist. The installation consists of a spatial report of a specific gathering in the Paris suburb of Lambert on February 11, 2017. This gathering of 3,000 people in front of the high court of Seine-Saint-Denis was motivated by the violent police assault on Théo L., a young Black man from the Paris suburb of Aulnay-sous-Bois two weeks earlier.

The architectural characteristics of the gathering’s spatial context are particularly striking in the way the protesters were stationed by fences across the street from the high court, and police officers in riot gear, situated above, controlled the pedestrian bridge linking the building with Bobigny bus station. From their prominent position, they were able to attack the crowd with tear gas, a chemical weapon that is prohibited in international conflicts. This installation or report further attempts to illustrate how the space of the suburbs remains a space where French colonial structures continue to operate against young people of colour.
